Amos 7-9: “Famine to Feasting”
I.) The worst possible famine is to be bereft of the Word of God (8:9-14)
– cf. Matthew 4:4, Deuteronomy 8:3: there is something more needful to humanity than our physical wholeness.
II.) God’s justice and mercy meet in the cross of Jesus Christ (9:1-15)
– 9:8, 9:11-15: Apparently absolute destruction isn’t the last word – but how can this be? How can God be just and the justifier of sinners?
– Acts 15:17: the apostles understood this promise to go beyond simply prosperity for future ethnic Israel to the inclusion of the Gentiles in communion with God and salvation.
– So the answer is: through Jesus’ death on the cross. The sinless So of God died as an atoning sacrifice for sin, so that anyone who puts their faith in Him knows the mercy and forgiveness of the God of love.
